Red House

Jimi Hendrix

Are You Experienced?
©1967

A mere nine months after his arrival in the United Kingdom, Jimi Hendrix released his first full-length recording. The album was entitled Are You Experienced? and entered the British charts on May 25, 1967, two weeks after being released by Track Records. (It would spend 33 weeks there and peak at No. 2.) It was a different story in the United States, though, where the album had not yet been released, and where Jimi Hendrix hadn't yet made a name for himself. But the stage was already being set for Jimi's triumphant homecoming.

Lyrics to Red House:

There's a red house over yonder
That's where my baby stays
Lord, there's a red house over yonder
Lord, that's where my baby stays
I ain't been home to see my baby
In ninety-nine and one half days

Wait a minute, something's wrong here
The key won't unlock this door
Wait a minute, something's wrong
Lord have mercy, this key won't unlock this door
Something's gone wrong here
I have a bad, bad feeling
That my baby don't live here no more
(That's alright--I still got my guitar)

Well, I might as well go back over yonder
Way back among the hills
Yeah, that's what I'm gonna do
Lord, I might as well go back over yonder
Way back yonder across the hills
'Cause if my baby don't love me no more
I know her sister will
